Cumulus by Lazerian for Peta Levi Bursary Installation at 100 % design

We’ve been busy the last few weeks developing, prototyping, correcting, cutting, folding and gluing for an installation proposal at 100 percent design. After weeks of hard work we have finally got to a stage where we are happy with the piece and the strength of the structure, which is made entirely from paper.

The Peta Levi Memorial Bursary installlation vision and criteria,
Vision

Open to Design-Nation members and any designer based in the UK, the Bursary holds a value equal to up to 20m² of space plus shell scheme (valued c. £5,000).

Cumulus by Lazerian

Cumulus is a sculptural paper installation newly created for exhibition at 100% Design 2009 for the Peta Levi bursury. The piece is constructed entirely using folded paper modules, which are hand assembled in situ and glued together to create a ceiling-suspended lattice.
The development of Cumulus was centered around the use of paper as a structural material in the creation of a large scale sculpture. Through hands-on experiment with paper forms, inspiration was drawn initially from the geometric formations comprising the molecular structure of crystalline materials, and architectural frameworks, which used a similar triangulation of multiple components in the creation of compound structures. A modular geometry was pursued, which would allow the piece to grow and be added to indefinitely.
The components for Cumulus are prescored on sheets of A1 paper using a plotting printer fitted with a cutting knife. The units will be pre-folded in preparation for on-site assembly (glued together using a hot-melt glue gun). A full scale test piece has been created to test the structure and build time for the piece. Based on this test piece, it is projected that a team of 20 volunteers will be required to complete the construction of the piece in one day. It is our intention to find student volunteers from Art schools and Universities in the London area (and beyond) who may find such an experience valuable to their art and design education. Direct communication with appropriate department heads will be carried out to garner support. Announcements through the Lazerian website and art and design based blogs will also be made to help reach potential supporters of the project.
